The following activity is aimed for children between the ages of 3 and 5 years of age. It is important that at this age children are still interacting and investigating different materials in order to develop their understandings of themselves and the world around them. (The Early Years Learning Framework for Australia, 2009).
Activity to be undertaken:
This activity is broken up into two parts.
Part One: Excursion to an Art Gallery.
Children will absolutely adore going out and about visiting an art gallery. Ensure the children branch off into small groups of 3 to 4, with a supervisor so they can all focus on a painting, rather than following one large group.
Children will then use their focus painting as inspiration for their artwork.
Part Two: Painting their very own artwork.
Allow the children to use what they saw at the museum to inspire their own painting. This activity is open ended, allowing the children to paint what they enjoy painting. It could be a visual representation of their emotions, thoughts and ideas.
Resources Required:
- Paint
- Paint brushes
- Give the children a blank space. For example, of paper, a blank canvas, 'butchers paper' etc.
- Explain to them that they should think about what they saw at the museum and what they would want to paint if they had the opportunity to place their art in a gallery for everyone to see.
- Let their creativity take over!
It is important not to limit children. Allow them to experiment with the materials and their own ideas. Let them be their own teacher, and experiment with the different colours, textures ways to manipulate their tools.
This will allow each child to produce their own individual artwork, that is like no other.
Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners:
"Children develop dispositions for learning such as curiosity, cooperation, confidence, creativity, commitment, enthusiasm, persistence, imagination and reflexibility.
- Children will express wonder and interest in their painting.
- Children will use painting to investigate, imagine and explore ideas.
- Children will use their senses to explore the feel/texture of the paint.
- They will express their learning through how they manipulate the tools and paint.
Outcome 5: Children are effective communicators.
'Children interact verbally and non-verbally with others for a range of purposes.'
- Children will be able to express their ideas and feelings through the painting.
- Children will experiment with ways of expressing ideas and meaning using the paint.
- Painting is apart of creative arts, and will assist them in creating meaning and ideas.
